We beautiful horses are called the Nokota®
A quiddity quibble for North Dakota;
Roaming the northern plain,
Very few of us remain,
Way back we walked with Lakota.Since we fought against Custer in his last campaign
We never back up from a roaring plane;
Without any commotion,
We flew over the ocean,
Such a journey was never in vain.
A couple of years ago we visited the site of the Custer battlefield, it’s a memorial park, and they have Indian guides to tell you the story. It is very interesting. One image that always comes to mind is that they Indian archers could fire arrows very rapidly and that the arrows literally rained down on the soldiers.

Huidekoper who got 60 nokotas from DeMores wrote in his memoires:
“Some of these ponies had bullet holes through their necks, received in the Custer fight”.

The Indians could ride and duck below the horse’s neck and shoot, using the horse as a shield. What’s really interesting as you walk or drive along the plain is that at one spot they found two, then 100 yards two more, then a quarter mile away 5 — It was a rout that shows the calvary men were pursued until the very end.

Would be interesting to visit “the greasy grass” as the place of the battle also was called, hopefully soon.
I saw a documentary about the new facts they’ve figured out:

Yes I agree and The Nokota Horse Conservancy still have a very hard time fighting for survival, financially.

Wow! Just wow! I absolutely love the imagery produced and am totally impressed at how you managed to pull off two stanzas without letting the rhythm break. I must say it is a very nice job.
